León

León has a history of over 2,000 years and was the capital of the medieval Kingdom of León. The city’s numerous stone buildings represent the artistic essence of different eras.

León Cathedral: Acclaimed as “pure Romanesque art,” it is one of Spain’s most beautiful Gothic structures. The current cathedral was built starting in 1255, on a site that previously housed Roman baths and an ancient Romanesque church.

Casa Botines: A work by the genius architect Gaudí.

Palace of los Guzmanes: Its courtyard features magnificent Plateresque-style ornamentation.

Basilica of San Isidoro: Its royal pantheon houses the tombs of 23 kings of León. The 12th-century dome paintings in the pantheon are uniquely exquisite, earning the church the nickname “Romanesque Sistine Chapel.”

Hostal de San Marcos: A Plateresque building constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries, it originally served as lodging for monks and pilgrims, later functioning as a prison.
