To defend Spanish territory against Moorish invasions, the Spanish built the city of Ávila in the 11th century. It is also known as the "City of Saints and Stones," as it is the birthplace of Saint Teresa and the burial site of Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada. The city retains its medieval charm, which can be seen in its Gothic churches and defensive fortifications—comprising 82 semicircular towers and 9 gates—that make up Spain’s most complete fortress complex.

The entire historic center of Ávila occupies the strip of land between the plateau and the river, giving it an elongated shape. Surrounding the four main Roman-era roads is an irregular medieval network of winding alleys and small plazas. The 2.5-kilometer-long defensive wall, featuring nine gates and 82 towers, is a prime example of medieval military architecture. Its structure and materials—including stones reused from earlier buildings—follow Roman urban planning principles.

Inside the wall is a stone-faced area where the cathedral, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is embedded into the rock face. Its main façade faces the town square, while its rear integrates seamlessly with the ramparts. Its towering spires dominate the other fortifications, highlighting its significant role in military defense.
