Zamora is located in the Castile and León Autonomous Community in northwestern Spain, perched on a rocky hill beside the Douro River, and serves as the capital of the Province of Zamora. The city boasts twenty-four Romanesque-style churches from the 12th and 13th centuries, earning it the title “Museum City of Romanesque Art” and making it the European city with the highest number of Romanesque churches.

Zamora has long nurtured some of Spain’s most traditional culture, and its many Romanesque churches are a prime example. Strolling through this ancient-feeling city, with green vines clinging to medieval windows, feels like stepping into a painting. Zamora Cathedral is surrounded by historic walls and gates, built between 1151 and 1174, and is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Romanesque architecture. Zamora Castle is a medieval fortress located northwest of the cathedral, dating back to the 10th century, offering the best views of the entire city. The city walls of Zamora are divided into three sections, dating from the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, and stand as living testimonies to history.

Zamora is famous for its Holy Week celebrations. Since 1974, Zamora’s Holy Week has been recognized by the European Union as an International Tourist Interest event. Each day during Holy Week features grand brotherhood processions, making it the liveliest and most visited time of the year in the city.
