Utrecht Coin Museum

The Utrecht Coin Museum is housed in a magnificent building within the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht, jointly established by four Dutch numismatic institutions: the Royal Cabinet of Coins in Leiden, the Utrecht Dutch Mint Museum, De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam, and the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht.

The museum’s most unique aspect is its unparalleled historical collection of coins. In addition to permanent exhibits, it also hosts temporary exhibitions featuring a diverse array of objects totaling up to 400,000 items. These include: coins, medals, banknotes, gemstones, foreign currencies, coin chests, images, coin laboratory equipment, design patterns, coin models, plaster casts, and various production tools. The collection houses royal medals once amassed by King William IV during his lifetime, as well as metal coins and tokens continued to be collected by his successors—these invaluable items all hold significant historical value. Among them are ancient Greek and Roman coins, commemorative medals, and gemstones collected in the 18th century, along with medieval coins and banknotes gathered in the 19th century.

Additionally, the museum displays banknotes issued by De Nederlandsche Bank since 1814, a long-term accumulation of coins from the Netherlands and its colonies, as well as many coins and banknotes gifted from abroad. There is also no shortage of bank cards published in different eras, along with coins, medals, and other items originally collected by the former Utrecht Dutch Mint Museum in the 19th century.
