Utrecht Central Museum

The Utrecht Central Museum, built in 1838, has a long history and is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. Currently, the exhibitions in the museum are divided into five categories, including artworks predating 1850, modern art, applied arts, historical artifacts of Utrecht, and fashion exhibitions. The museum is located in a medieval monastery in the city, which, apart from serving as a museum, still partly functions as an orphanage, military facility, and a hospital.

The museum houses a total collection of over 6,000 artworks by nearly 1,200 artists, encompassing a wide range of 20th-century Dutch visual art, early modern art of Utrecht, surrealist works from the 1930s and 1940s in Utrecht, and abstract paintings from the 20th century. Among the highlights are modern art pieces by Theo van Doesburg, as well as magic realist works by Pyke Koch and Joop Moesman from the 1930s in the Netherlands. The museum also features a substantial collection of contemporary photography dating from 1838 to the present, consisting of photos depicting real-life events. To preserve these historical photographs, the museum only holds two major photographic exhibitions every three years.
