Utrecht

Utrecht is the most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht and also serves as its provincial capital. It is the easternmost city in the Randstad region and the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands.

Many of Utrecht’s buildings are historic structures dating back to the Middle Ages, and since the 18th century, it has been a religious center of the Netherlands. Currently, it is most famous for Utrecht Cathedral. In addition to its ancient cathedrals and university, Utrecht is home to an observatory, theaters, and numerous museums, making it the second-largest cultural city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. In 2018, it was honored as the European Capital of Culture. Among its many museums, the most well-known include the Aboriginal Art Museum, the Utrecht Centraal Museum, the Dick Bruna House, the Museum Catharijneconvent, the Railway Museum, and the Museum Speelklok.

Utrecht features an ancient canal built in the 11th century that runs through the old town and is the oldest canal in the city. The most distinctive feature of the Utrecht canals is their docks, which are lower than the surrounding roads and run along the water’s edge, creating a unique landscape. Descending the steps from the canal embankment and standing on the dock, you can gaze at the picturesque scene of winding rivers passing under arched bridges, surrounded by historic buildings, the melodious ringing of church bells, and lush greenery.
