Palace of the Savoy

The Palace of the Savoy was one of the most famous buildings in Italy during the 17th century. In the following centuries, it underwent varying degrees of renovation and expansion. Today, it is not difficult to discern the distinctive architectural style crafted by the master builders of Turin at that time. Until 1865, the Palace of the Savoy served as the residence of the Dukes of Savoy, Kings of Italy, and other nobility. The palace features lavish architecture, with each room decorated according to the tastes of the Savoy dynasty aristocrats, including numerous clocks, porcelain pieces, silverware, and various antique furnishings.

When Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy moved his capital to Turin in 1562, he initiated a series of architectural plans for both the city and his own residence to showcase the power of his ruling family. At that time, the facade of the Savoy Ducal Palace was adorned with diamond-shaped ashlar stones, and defensive fortifications were also constructed within the Palace of the Savoy. This high-quality complex, designed and decorated by the era’s top architects and artists, expanded from the royal palace in the ruling center of Turin into the surrounding rural areas, encompassing many village homes and hunting lodges.
