Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy

The Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy refer to nine sacred mountains in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions of northwestern Italy. Among them, the Sacred Mountain of Oropa is one of the most distinctive in Italian legend and folk religious customs. These sacred mountains feature a group of chapels built to recreate a "Jerusalem in Italy" for Christian pilgrimages.

The Santuario di Santa Maria Assunta on Mount Varallo is the earliest built and includes 44 chapels and more than 600 terracotta statues of robed clerics. Later chapels were modeled after it. These chapels were mainly constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries. They hold spiritual symbolism and, in terms of architectural craftsmanship, blend seamlessly with the surrounding hills, trees, and lakes, possessing high aesthetic value. They have also had a significant influence on architecture elsewhere in Europe. In addition, the chapels house many important works of art such as murals and sculptures.
