Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is a lake located in northwestern Italy, the second largest in the country after Lake Garda. Parts of the lake extend into Swiss territory, covering an area of 212.5 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 372 meters. As the westernmost of the Alpine pre-alpine lakes, it enjoys a central location and is connected to an extensive road network. This makes it extremely convenient and relaxing to reach from major northern Italian cities for vacations or weekend getaways.

For centuries, Lake Maggiore, surrounded by mountains and lush green hills, has been controlled by powerful Italian families such as the Borromeo and Visconti, who built castles and villa gardens here. Therefore, in addition to its stunning scenery, the lake's historical and artistic heritage gives it an air of mystery, with charming sights everywhere. No wonder the French philosopher Montesquieu described it as "the most beautiful place in the world."

Adding to Lake Maggiore’s charm are its nearby small islands: the famous Isola Bella features the 17th-century Palazzo Borromeo surrounded by beautiful gardens; the unique Isola dei Pescatori; Isola Madre, known for its botanical garden rich in rare plants; and the islands known as the Castelli di Cannero.

Enjoying the waters of Lake Maggiore is an essential experience. The main resort towns are connected by ferries, and there are also hiking opportunities of varying lengths designed to help visitors discover both the most famous and lesser-known spots. Here, you can certainly engage in a wide range of sports, from traditional activities to more thrilling ones like hang gliding, canoeing, windsurfing, paragliding, and powered hang gliders—there’s something for everyone.
