Abbey of San Michele

The Abbey of San Michele is located atop Mount Pirchiriano in Italy, at the entrance of the Valle di Susa valley, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. From the summit, one can enjoy panoramic views of the rolling hills around Turin.

The exact date of the Abbey’s construction is unknown, but it is believed to have been built around the late 10th century, between 984 and 990 AD. Prior to that, there were likely ancient religious structures on the mountain peak or slopes. The abbey was constructed to provide pilgrims with shelter and rest, situated right at the midpoint of the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. Many fascinating legends are associated with the abbey, the most famous being the tale of the beautiful Alda.

Inside the church of the Abbey of San Michele are the sarcophagi of several important figures from the House of Savoy. The remains of approximately 24 princes of the Kingdom of Sardinia are laid to rest in these tombs. There is also the famed “Staircase of the Dead,” a steep stone stairway that leads visitors to a crypt — a man-made cave carved directly into the cliff face — which houses the skeletal remains of monks and other deceased individuals.
