Sacro Monte di Varallo is one of the oldest sacred mountains in Italy, built in 1491. The first structure erected was the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, whose overall design is an almost perfect imitation of the relevant architecture in the holy city of Jerusalem. Within less than 25 years, a total of 21 chapels were constructed in the Varallo area.

Today, the Sacro Monte di Varallo boasts 45 chapels dating back to the 16th century. Each chapel is adorned with frescoes and sets of statues, totaling over 4,000 individual figures and more than 800 statues, mainly depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Inside each small chapel, life-sized statues recreate biblical scenes, many with graphic detail, including Original Sin, the Massacre of the Innocents by King Herod, the Holy Innocents of Bethlehem, and the Passion of Christ. The architecture, sculptures, and frescoes here are made from locally sourced materials, showcasing a strong emphasis on tradition both technically and artistically. The Sacro Monte di Varallo holds a unique and significant position among all sacred mountains due to its breathtaking natural scenery and faithful artistic representation.
