St. Thomas Church

St. Thomas Church is a historic building located in Strasbourg, Alsace, situated along the "Romanesque Route of Alsace." It is also known as the "Protestant Cathedral" or "Old Maiden" and was listed as a national historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 1862.

St. Thomas Church is the principal Protestant church in Strasbourg. Since the city's annexation by France in 1681, Strasbourg Cathedral has once again belonged to the Catholic Church. The massive Romanesque-Gothic style St. Thomas Church is the only hall church in the Alsace region, measuring 65 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and 22 meters in height. It is famous for its organ built by Silbermann. The church’s organ, constructed in 1741, was played by Mozart in 1778. Additionally, the church houses another organ from 1905, designed by Albert Schweitzer.

The interior of St. Thomas Church also features numerous sculptures and exquisitely carved stone sarcophagi. Some date back as early as 1130, while others are in Renaissance or Neoclassical styles. The intricate carvings are truly breathtaking.
