Citrus Garden

The Citrus Garden is not an orchard but the largest municipal park in Strasbourg, France, located opposite the Council of Europe and covering an area of 26 hectares. Whether amidst the green grass in spring, under the bright summer sun, among the golden foliage in autumn, or in the snowy winter landscape, groups of people—families and friends alike—stroll through the Citrus Garden, creating a serene and elegant leisure scene.

In 1803, to accommodate 100 citrus trees gifted by the Château de Bouxwiller, the Strasbourg municipal authorities built the Citrus Garden. The park was initially designed entirely in the French garden style, with its main pathways created by André Le Nôtre, the designer of the gardens at Versailles. Upon the garden’s completion, Empress Josephine of Napoleon personally came to preside over the inauguration ceremony, and the central palace in the park was named the Palace of Josephine.

Over the following decades after its inauguration, the Citrus Garden underwent multiple expansions and renovations. The northwest part of the Palace of Josephine was redesigned in the English garden style: vast stretches of lush green lawns, scattered exotic plants, and winding paths through the grass and trees turned this corner of the park into a poetic and romantic urban oasis. Today’s Citrus Garden no longer has citrus trees, nor does it have fences, and it is open to the public 24 hours a day.
