Barrage Vauban

The Barrage Vauban is a dam on the Ill River, located west of the Petite France district in Strasbourg. It was built between 1686 and 1700 and designed by the French engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Vauban (Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban: 1633–1707) was a French Marshal and a renowned military engineer. He authored works such as “On the Attack and Defense of Fortified Places” and “Treatise on Fortification,” and many of the fortresses he designed have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Barrage Vauban is exceptionally beautiful in design, adorned with sculptures and consisting of three levels. The lowest level features an arched structure that allows water to flow through, while the upper two levels contain arched windows facing outward, and the top offers an observation deck. Originally, the dam served two primary purposes: controlling the flow of the river and acting as a defensive fortress against invasions. The surrounding natural scenery is picturesque, and you can either climb to the top observation deck for panoramic views or take a boat ride to admire the dam’s intricate craftsmanship up close. Especially at night, when illuminated, the entire Barrage Vauban glows magnificently, and its reflection in the water creates a dreamlike scene where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s not.
