The Tomi Ungerer Museum

Tomi Ungerer (English: Jean-Thomas "Tomi" Ungerer, November 28, 1931–) was born in what is now Strasbourg, France. A illustrator and writer fluent in English, German, and French, he has published 140 books, known for his sharp social satire and humorous language. In 2007, his hometown established a museum in his honor — the “Tomi Ungerer Center.”

The Ungerer Museum is housed in a villa named Greiner, an historic building constructed in 1884, with exhibits spread across three floors of the residence. The museum displays around 8,000 works donated by Tomi Ungerer to the city of Strasbourg, where he was born in 1931. In addition, there are works by his fellow cartoonists Saul Steinberg, Ronald Searle, and André François, as well as a large collection of antique toys he amassed. The collections are displayed by theme, and among the 300 original pieces shown at a time are illustrations from children’s books, satirical drawings, and advertising art. Selected illustrations and paintings related to the 20th and 21st centuries are also worth viewing. The basement is dedicated to his “0” and “half-0” drawings and is not open to children.
