On the Cathedral Square, northwest of the dazzling Strasbourg Cathedral, stands the most famous, magnificent, and best-preserved medieval Gothic civilian residential building in Strasbourg — the Maison Kammerzell. The ownership of this building has changed hands many times, and the name of the house comes from the merchant Philippe Kammerzell who purchased it in the 19th century.

The Maison Kammerzell is the most captivating house in all of Strasbourg. It is a well-preserved medieval Holy Roman Empire structure, originally built in 1427 and renovated twice, in 1467 and 1589. It features a German Renaissance architectural style. The lower part of the house is built from stone, while the upper floors have elaborately carved wooden windows, also reflecting the folk architectural style of the Rhine region with its black-and-white timber framing. It is the largest and most ornate half-timbered house in Strasbourg.

The building boasts a total of 75 windows, adorned with carvings depicting biblical scenes, mythology, the zodiac, musicians, and more. The window panes are made of numerous circular metal pieces inlaid with colored glass — a craft that is said to be lost today. The interior of the house is decorated with frescoes by Alsatian painter Léo Schnug (1878–1933) on all floors. Since the 19th century, the ground floor has housed a restaurant, making it the oldest still-operating building in Strasbourg.
