The creator of the world-famous Statue of Liberty — Bartholdi — was born in Colmar, France, so it’s common to see souvenirs related to him or the Statue of Liberty in Colmar. His former home, situated on Colmar's Merchants' Street, has been converted into a museum. The residence displays approximately 60 sculpture models, about 10 of which are related to his hometown, Colmar.

A liberal himself, Bartholdi believed that the best form of government was like the democratic politics of the United States, which inspired his creation of the Statue of Liberty. The statue’s prototype was his wife and mother. The towering 42-meter Statue of Liberty was an enormous undertaking — the specially designed internal framework was even entrusted to Gustave Eiffel, the engineer behind the Eiffel Tower. The statue was divided into multiple sections, requiring 9,000 professional artisans to craft its various parts, which were later assembled piece by piece. The museum’s third floor showcases the sculpture models of the Statue of Liberty and the process of its completion. Here, you can also see a sculpture of an ear that is half the size of the real statue’s left ear, giving you a sense of just how monumental an achievement the Statue of Liberty truly was.
