Colmar is located in the eastern part of France’s Alsace region, west of the Ill River, a tributary of the Rhine. It is a small town in northeastern France’s Alsace and the capital of the Haut-Rhin department. It is the third most populous city in the Alsace region, after Strasbourg and Mulhouse.

Colmar is the wine center of Alsace and a highly charming small town that attracts tourists from around the world with its beautiful natural scenery, mysterious winemaking traditions, well-preserved old town, numerous iconic buildings, and museums. The renowned Unterlinden Museum is a must-visit attraction. Located within a monastery next to the Chapel of St. John by a 1232 lime tree, it exhibits important sculptures and paintings from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance periods along the Rhine, as well as international modern art and design. The St. Martin’s Church, situated in the heart of Colmar’s Old Town and built between 1234 and 1365, is a fine example of Gothic architecture, with its stained-glass windows showcasing numerous Gothic and Renaissance sculptures and altars. The 17th-century Renaissance-era Maison des Têtes (House of Heads), the Bartholdi Museum which displays works and materials related to the international sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and the Gothic-style Dominican Church are all worth visiting.

The tranquil waters of the Ill River tributaries flow gently, boats drift softly on the surface, and the quaint alleyways, together with the enticing aromas wafting from uniquely designed wooden houses, give the town a strong Alsatian charm that is well worth savoring at length.
