The Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary includes Malpelo Island and its surrounding marine environment, covering an area of 857,500 hectares. This vast marine park is the largest no-fishing zone in the eastern tropical Pacific and provides a crucial habitat and major food source for internationally endangered marine species.

The Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is home to more than 200 hammerhead sharks, over 1,000 silky sharks, as well as whale sharks and tuna. It is especially a gathering place for sharks, groupers, and snappers, and one of the few locations in the world where the short-nose rough shark can be spotted. This species has been identified as a deep-water shark.

Steep cliffs and naturally stunning caves make this a globally recognized top diving destination. The deep waters provide an undisturbed environment for a large population of large predators and plankton, allowing them to maintain their natural behaviors.
