Barranquilla

Barranquilla is located in the Magdalena River Delta on the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia and is the capital of the Atlántico Department. It is the largest city and seaport in northern Colombia’s Caribbean region and the fourth most populous city in the country.

Much of Barranquilla’s architecture was constructed in the 20th century, with some dating back to the colonial period. However, the predominant style is from the late 19th century, influenced by Americans, Europeans, Middle Easterners, and Asians who settled here. Over the years, Barranquilla has developed into a well-known tourist hub, particularly bustling during Carnival and New Year’s celebrations. Visitors can explore attractions such as Barranquilla Zoo, the Museum of Modern Art, the Carnival Museum, the Aviation Museum, Caribbean Culture Park, and the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology.

Barranquilla is home to Colombia’s largest cultural festival — the Barranquilla Carnival. This significant event was declared part of Colombia’s cultural heritage in 2001 and recognized by UNESCO in 2003.
