Introduction

Lake Abajé is one of El Salvador’s postcard sights, known for its washerwomen and light-colored sand dunes. This lake is formed naturally by rainfall and the convergence of rivers that pass through the area. The water has a darker hue due to the influence of microorganisms and minerals in it. Abajé Lake Park features dedicated bike paths, restaurants, and jogging tracks, as well as the “House of Music,” which exhibits documentaries, photos, and musical instruments that showcase the culture and arts of Bahian music. The “Washerwomen’s House” not only provides a workspace for the washerwomen but also runs a program aimed at protecting the lake.

One unique feature of Lake Abajé is that the water temperature varies depending on where visitors are located. This is because the layers of water at the bottom of the lake do not mix, resulting in inconsistent temperatures. The sand dunes, formed by sand carried by the sea breeze from Itapuã Beach, are surrounded by vegetation and are home to many different species of orchids—some very rare—as well as fig trees and guava trees. Lake Abajé was designated as an environmental protection area as early as 1987.
