Lake Paranoá

Lake Paranoá is located in the eastern part of Brasília, the capital of Brazil. It is a man-made lake covering an area of 48 square kilometers, with an average depth of 12 meters and a maximum depth of up to 38 meters. The lake was formed by the famous Brazilian urban planner Lúcio Costa, who utilized the local hilly terrain to build a dam that blocked the waters of the Paranoá River and several other streams, resulting in a lake with a circumference of over 80 kilometers. It was designed to regulate humidity during the dry season and supplement the city’s water supply.

The scenic blend of water and sky not only beautifies Brasília, a rapidly growing city, but has also significantly contributed to local economic and social development. Lake Paranoá also plays an important role in flood prevention. It has become a popular spot for leisure and water sports among the residents of Brasília, with some sections of the shoreline even featuring man-made beaches, giving visitors a beach-like experience. On weekends, many people enjoy activities on the lake such as driving motorboats, riding jet skis, boating, swimming, diving, surfing, and fishing. Boat cruises and evening events on the water have become new and popular tourist attractions, drawing considerable attention from visitors.
