Lake Winnipeg is located in the northern part of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, approximately 55 kilometers from the city of Winnipeg. It is the largest lake on the southern edge of Canada and part of the undeveloped pristine water system in southern Canada.

Lake Winnipeg is the fifth-largest freshwater lake in Canada and the twelfth-largest freshwater lake on Earth, and one of Canada’s most well-known lakes. The lake is long and narrow, stretching 416 kilometers in length, with an average depth of 12 meters and a maximum depth of up to 36 meters. It covers an area of 24,514 square kilometers, with a drainage basin of 984,200 square kilometers and a shoreline length of 1,858 kilometers. Parts of Lake Winnipeg feature beaches, large limestone cliffs, and numerous bat caves, making it a popular destination for tourists. The lake also contains numerous small, undeveloped islands of varying sizes, which remain in their pristine state with intact ecosystems. This gives the lake potential to become the first ecotourism region in southern Canada and the province of Manitoba.

Lake Winnipeg plays a significant role in commercial fisheries, generating tens of millions of dollars annually, with walleye and whitefish being the two most abundantly caught species, accounting for 90% of the total catch.
