Introduction: On the coastal road of Aqaba, there is a castle from the Mamluk era. The so-called Mamluks were soldiers of slave origin from various ethnic groups. The Ayyubid dynasty formed an elite guard corps of Mamluk slave soldiers. The Mamluk cavalry was renowned for its bravery and combat skills. In 1250, they fought against the Seventh Crusade — contesting Cairo — achieving a very glorious victory. They then seized control of the government in Cairo and established what is commonly referred to as the Sultanate of the Mamluks. Most of the sultans of the Mamluk dynasty came to power through military coups by soldiers, harboring an almost instinctive obsession with war. The country was constantly embroiled in conflict. Through a series of wars with the Crusaders, Mongols, and Turks, the Mamluks quickly grew powerful, and their territory once expanded across all of the Arab East. In 1517, they were ultimately defeated in battle against the Ottomans and thus came to an end. Admission / Opening Hours: Entry is available with a ticket to the Aqaba Archaeological Museum.
