National Musical Instruments Museum of Kazakhstan

The National Musical Instruments Museum of Kazakhstan is located in a quaint building on the east side of Panfilov Park in the capital city of Almaty. Established in 1980, the museum was originally built in 1908 as an officers' assembly hall, and later became a museum dedicated to the collection and exhibition of traditional Kazakh musical instruments.

Renowned as one of the world's most notable musical instrument museums, the National Musical Instruments Museum of Kazakhstan houses a diverse collection of traditional instruments from various regions across Kazakhstan, as well as many instruments from around the globe. The museum’s collection includes 53 types of instruments once used by celebrated poets and musicians such as Abay and Zhambyl. The instruments span plucked, bowed, wind, and percussion categories, with the dombra being the most numerous—boasting around 13 different types—that leave visitors in awe.

In addition to traditional Kazakh instruments, the museum also features ethnic musical instruments from many other countries, including China’s erhu and pipa.
