St. Francis Xavier Church

St. Francis Xavier Church is a cultural tourism attraction.

Introduction

St. Francis Xavier Chapel was built in 1938, and its design mainly adopts the Baroque style typical of Macau’s main churches. The exterior of the chapel is predominantly cream-colored, featuring oval windows and a bell tower. In front of the chapel stands a monument commemorating the victory over pirates, erected in 1910. Inside the church are housed some of Asia’s most sacred relics, including the arm bone of St. Francis Xavier preserved in a silver reliquary. After preaching in Japan, the saint planned to enter China but passed away in 1552 on Shangchuan Island, 70 kilometers from Macau. In Japan, 26 Catholic martyrs—both foreign and Japanese—were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597, and hundreds of Japanese Christians were killed in the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637. Some of the martyrs' remains were brought to Macau and originally stored in St. Paul’s Church, but after a fire destroyed the entire church, the relics were transferred to the Cathedral and later moved to St. Francis Xavier Chapel in 1974.
