Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Introduction

Also known as Sam Po Kong Temple, it was built to commemorate Zheng He, the Chinese Ming Dynasty eunuch and admiral who made seven voyages to the Western Seas between 1405 and 1435. Surrounded by large trees providing ample shade, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is cool, tranquil, and serene. The temple’s main gate is adorned with paintings of two generals clad in battle robes and wielding axes and swords, looking majestic and imposing. On the door pillars are written a couplet: "A relic of glory from five hundred years ago, a display of divine spirit across all lands." At the center of the temple is a statue of Zheng He in military attire and holding a sword, with a banner reading “Zheng He Sam Po Gong” hanging above. This temple was constructed in 1646 using building materials imported from China. The main hall’s roof is decorated with animal and human figures, and worshippers visit in great numbers. Walk straight along Jalan Sam Po to see the temple, which is located next to Hang Li Poh’s Well in front of Bukit Cina and can be visited together with the well.
