Fort Santiago

Introduction Fort Santiago is a Portuguese-style structure from the early 16th century, reputed to be the largest and most formidable fortress in Southeast Asia. The fortress was built by the Portuguese after they captured Malacca in 1511. In 1607, it was heavily damaged by Dutch cannon fire, leaving only the gatehouse intact. Locals regard the fortress as a spiritual symbol of Malacca. The surviving ancient gate is a Western European-style historic building, adorned with rugged carvings on the gatehouse and topped with a long, small arch that resembles a hat. The bastion on the right has been preserved to this day. Inside the gatehouse, there is an underground tunnel said to lead directly to St. John’s Fort at the hilltop. Transportation
