Bukit China

Bukit China, also known as "Chinese Hill," is located in the southeastern part of Malacca City, covering an area of 160 hectares. With a height of 1,009 feet, the hill isn’t particularly tall, but it is scenic and boasts undulating peaks. Its name comes from the Ming Dynasty’s Eunuch Admiral Zheng He, who visited Malacca in 1406, stationed here, and frequently walked on the hill, thus giving it the name "San Bao Shan" (Three Treasures Hill).

There is historical basis for the name "Chinese Hill." According to the Malaysian historical text "Sejarah Melayu" (Malay Annals), there is a story about a Ming Dynasty princess who was married off to Malacca. It tells of how, after Malaccan envoys concluded their visit to China and were preparing to return home, the Ming Emperor decided to betroth Princess Hang Li Po to the Sultan of Malacca and tasked the envoys with escorting her to Malacca. Upon arrival, Sultan Mansur was so struck by Princess Hang Li Po’s beauty that he asked her to convert to Islam and took her as his royal consort. Princess Hang Li Po and her entourage lived on this hill, which is why the Malays call it "Bukit China" (Chinese Hill).

Bukit China also houses the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China, with over 12,500 graves spread across 25 hectares. Most of the tombs date back to the Ming Dynasty, serving as a testament to the centuries of Chinese settlement, hard work, and land cultivation. It also symbolizes the harmonious coexistence and profound friendship between the people of China and Malaysia.
