Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum

Since the Ming Dynasty, Chinese people began to migrate to Malacca. As there were very few women among the early migrants, Chinese men intermarried with locals. The Baba and Nyonya are the male and female descendants of these unions between Chinese men and local Malay women in Malacca. A museum dedicated to the Baba and Nyonya was established — the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum.

The museum was built in 1896 as the private residence of the Chan family. The architecture of the house features extremely refined carvings. Upon entering the hall, visitors are greeted by a bright and spacious courtyard design. Chinese lanterns blend with the crystal chandeliers inside the house, showcasing sheer luxury. Guests can explore the various rooms, where the exhibits comprehensively display the daily lifestyle of that era. The museum provides a detailed introduction to the way of life of the Baba and Nyonya in the late 19th century, including their clothing, bridal chambers, home decorations and furnishings, cultural artifacts, art collections, photographs, box cameras and televisions, carved artworks, golden forks, and jewelry.

The Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum has also served as a filming location for many movies, including Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution” and the Singaporean TV drama “The Little Nyonya.”
