Temple of Zheng He

The Temple of Zheng He, also known as the San Bao Gong Temple or "Baoshan Pavilion," was built in 1795 by a Chinese leader to commemorate the visit of Admiral Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty to Malacca in 1409. It is now widely known as the "San Bao Temple." It is said that the bricks and tiles used to construct the temple were transported from China, giving it great historical significance.

In the courtyard of the Temple of Zheng He stands a tall, handsome statue of Zheng He. Local Chinese believe that touching certain parts of the statue can bring blessings. The original statue of Admiral Zheng He on the altar has been missing for many years. At the center of the main hall is the deity "Da Bo Gong" (Earth God), widely worshipped in the region. Da Bo Gong governs land, wealth, and health, and is believed to bring prosperity and good health. Next to the Temple of Zheng He is the San Bao Well, the oldest well in Malacca. Known for its clear and sweet water, it is famous far and wide. Legend has it that when the Ming Dynasty’s eunuch admiral Zheng He was sent on a mission to Malacca, he set up camp at Bukit Cina (Chinese Hill) and dug over ten wells around the hill for his soldiers to use. Today, only two wells remain, which have been preserved to prevent damage.

There is another legend about the San Bao Well, claiming that it was dug by attendants of Princess Hang Li Po. The Chinese emperor had given Princess Hang Li Po in marriage to Sultan Mansur Shah of Malacca, who granted the area around Bukit Cina to the princess and her entourage. This well served as their source of drinking water. It remains unclear which story is accurate.
