Malacca Zoo

Established in 1963 and opened to the public in 1987, Malacca Zoo covers an area of 54 hectares and is located 13 kilometers from Malacca City. It is a well-known zoo in Malacca and one of the most popular tourist attractions.

Malacca Zoo is the second-largest zoo in Malaysia and also the best-managed one, serving as a research destination for zoologists. It was the first zoo in the region to exhibit the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros and the wild Indian bison. Currently, the park is home to a wide variety of animals, with around 200 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The most attractive among them include the Indian bison, serow, and Malayan tiger, which draw visitors from all over.

The orangutans in the zoo have become a new favorite among visitors. There are currently three trained orangutans that roam freely within the park. Out of the zoo’s total of eight orangutans, three have been “trained” and now enjoy free movement, wandering around the grounds and becoming popular photography subjects for visitors. They move about freely, occasionally climbing trees or approaching visitors for food—an entertaining sight that has won them much popularity.

Malacca Zoo also offers many family-friendly facilities, such as night zoo tours and fishing activities, ensuring fun for both adults and children.
