Malacca City

Malacca City is the capital of Malacca State in Malaysia and is the country’s oldest historic city. It is most notable for its traditional architecture, including many Chinese-style residences and ancient streets that remain well-preserved to this day. In 2008, Malacca City and George Town, the capital of Penang State, were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The urban area of Malacca is divided into the new town and the old town. The old town is quite crowded, filled with numerous preserved historical sites crammed into narrow streets and corners. The new town is located on the other side of the Malacca River, with most buildings constructed on reclaimed land. It features modern shopping malls and serves as a hub for dining, entertainment, and leisure. The government buildings, churches, squares, and fortifications in Malacca showcase the city’s early development. The winding, narrow streets and diverse architectural styles—many homes adorned with exquisitely patterned tiles, lion door knockers, and dragon-phoenix motifs—highlight the unique charm of this historic capital.

The Malacca Straits Mosque was opened in 2006 and appears to float when the water level is high; the Malacca SkyTower offers the best panoramic views of the entire city; the Malacca Sultanate Palace is simple yet elegant, serving as one of the most outstanding examples of Malaysia’s glorious history. In addition, the Malacca Stamp Museum, Porta de Santiago, Dutch Square, Christ Church, Bukit China, and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple are also must-visits.
