Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is located by the sea in Pattaya, Thailand. Rather than being just a temple, it is more like a masterpiece of religious art — an entirely wooden structure adorned with Buddhist and Hindu sculptures that are incredibly lifelike, leaving visitors in awe.

Located by the sea, the Sanctuary of Truth looks from a distance like a sailboat anchored along the coast, but even more magnificent and beautiful. It is a unique architectural work that blends religion, culture, and art. Funded by Thai tycoon Lek Viriyaphant, construction began in 1981. Although Lek Viriyaphant has passed away, the building project continues and is expected to be completed by 2025. The Sanctuary of Truth stands 100 meters high, 100 meters long, and covers an area of 2,115 square meters. Since the entire structure is made of wood, it deteriorates over time due to age. Some older sections require constant repairs, while new parts continue to be built, making the full completion of the Sanctuary of Truth an enormous undertaking. That’s why some say it’s a building that may never be finished.

The entire sanctuary is constructed from teakwood without using a single nail. Instead, it is built using traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, tongue and groove, and wooden pegs. Every corner of the temple features exquisitely intricate wood carvings, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of Thai wood carving. Deities come to life in vivid detail, appearing right before the eyes of visitors.
