Akita City is a city located in the northwest of Japan's Tohoku region and in the central part of Akita Prefecture. It serves as the prefectural capital and is the most populous city in the prefecture. This city is a garden-like urban area where tree-lined green spaces can be found everywhere. To the east lie the Dewa Mountains that surround the sacred Mount Taihei, while to the west is the Japanese Sea, famous for its spectacular sunsets, stretching endlessly with breathtaking scenery.

Akita has long been known for its rice production and is also widely recognized as a renowned sake-producing region. Moreover, when it comes to Akita, people often speak of the “Akita beauties,” as the city is famed for having many attractive women. It is often called the “City of the Golden-Shining People of the North — Akita.” The city makes full use of its exceptional natural advantages to create a vibrant and comfortable living environment, showcasing an elegant urban charm. The city is charming all year round: Chuo Park is the best spot to view cherry blossoms in spring, while Mount Taihei in autumn is a riot of colors, resembling a stunningly hanging rainbow. During the Harvest Festival, Akita hosts one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region — the Kanto Festival. The kanto lantern poles, each hung with 46 lanterns and shaped like rice ears, are used to pray for a bountiful harvest.

When it comes to tasting, sake is a must. There are eight breweries in the city where you can fully enjoy a variety of flavors, from sweet to dry. Another local highlight is hot pot cuisine, including “Mochi Vegetable Hot Pot,” which simmers sticky rice cakes formed on skewers made of cedar or bamboo along with vegetables, and “Shottsuru Hot Pot,” made with the area’s famous salted herring — both incredibly delicious.
