Tokorozawa Aviation Pioneers Memorial Hall

Tokorozawa is regarded as "the birthplace of Japanese aviation." Although the Tokorozawa Airport was occupied by the United States after World War II, it was eventually returned to Japan through the persistent efforts of local citizens. As the birthplace of Japanese aviation, the area has a long history in the field, making the establishment of the Tokorozawa Aviation Pioneers Memorial Hall a natural progression.

Located in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, the Tokorozawa Aviation Pioneers Memorial Hall was established in 1933 as a memorial dedicated to the history of Japanese aviation. It sits on Japan’s first airport, which opened in 1911 when Yoshitoshi Tokugawa made Japan’s first powered flight. The original single runway still exists today. The surrounding outdoor area has been developed into Tokorozawa Aviation Park, where aircraft are displayed. The indoor exhibits feature a variety of historically significant Japanese aircraft, including the Type 1 Plane, Nieuport 81E1, North American T-6G, Type 91 Fighter, Fuji T-1 Trainer, Stinson L-5E, and Sikorsky S-55.
