Gyoda City

Gyoda City is a city in northern Saitama Prefecture, developed from the castle town of “Oshi Castle,” which was built in 1490, and is surrounded by the pastoral landscapes of the Saitama region. It is a historic city that still preserves nine large ancient burial mounds constructed before the 7th century.

Gyoda City is rich in historical landmarks and features colorful parks. The Saitama Kofun Cluster is among the most notable in Japan, making it an excellent destination for exploring history and culture. There is a 300,000-square-meter historic park that houses many large burial mounds, including the gravesite of ancient rulers and Japan’s largest circular tomb—Maruhiro Yama Kofun. Every spring, the “Koh Konbi Fire Festival” is held as a traditional ritual. The Gyoda City Local History Museum, located on the site of Oshi Castle, provides detailed insights into the city’s history and culture, showcasing the daily life of the castle town’s citizens and the production process of tabi socks through exhibits and panels.

Two-tongued short tabi socks are an indispensable part of Japanese clothing culture. In Gyoda City, the production of these tabi socks has become a traditional industry, accounting for about half of the Japanese market.
