Kawagoe City

Kawagoe City is a city located in the southwestern part of Saitama Prefecture, Japan. It was formerly part of Iruma District and is currently designated as a core city and a regional employment area. During the Edo period, the city flourished as the castle town of Kawagoe Domain and was known as "Little Edo." During the abolition of the han system and establishment of prefectures, it served as the capital of Iruma Prefecture, and one of the predecessors of Saitama Resona Bank, the Hachijugo Bank, originated here.

As Kawagoe has never been devastated by war, it has preserved numerous temples and historic streets. The city’s tourist attractions attract around 5 million visitors annually. Visitors can explore the Kawagoe City Museum, Kawagoe Festival Hall, Kawagoe Water Park, Isasumi Park, the Time Bell, Kawagoe Ichibangai, the Former Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, the Saitama Resona Bank Kawagoe Branch (a nationally registered tangible cultural property), Kitain Temple, Chūin Temple, Sengan Tōshōgū Shrine, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, Miyayono Shrine, Kawagoe Castle Ruins, and the Kosanba Shell Mound.

The "Kawagoe Festival," held on the third weekend of October each year, is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Passed down since the Edo period, the festival brings immense vitality to the city’s old streets during the event, filling the air with an uplifting atmosphere.
