Princes Bridge

Built in 1888, Princes Bridge is an important arched iron bridge in Melbourne that spans the Yarra River and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The current Princes Bridge is the third bridge built on the same site — a wooden bridge was constructed here in 1844, followed by a stone bridge in 1850. This current iron bridge has a history of over 120 years.

Spanning 120 meters in length and 30 meters in width, Princes Bridge connects Swanston Street on the northern bank of the Yarra River to St Kilda Road on the southern bank. The bridge features three arches supported by bluestone piers, giving it exceptional strength and facilitating smooth traffic flow. On each pier of the bridge, there are iconic structures adorned with symbols of Australia such as crowns, kangaroos, sheep, sailboats, and whales.

Due to its prime location, Princes Bridge serves as a venue for many events, such as Moomba Festival and New Year’s Eve celebrations. When illuminated, the bridge becomes even more stunning and graceful.
