Princess Theatre

Located in Melbourne, the Princess Theatre has been in use since 1857 and is one of the city’s most dazzling landmarks. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is hailed as the most beautiful streetscape on 163 Spring Street.

The exterior of the Princess Theatre features grand Victorian architecture with a towering roof and prominent eaves. Most remarkably, its roof is movable — making it the world’s first theatre with a retractable roof. The interior is adorned in Second Empire style, resplendent and luxurious, giving the impression of stepping into a magnificent palace filled with an air of mystery. The theatre has 1,488 seats, allowing nearly 1,500 audience members to enjoy captivating musicals in comfort.

A wide range of domestic and international operas have been performed at the Princess Theatre, which has also been the birthplace of many internationally renowned musical works. In addition to plays, musicals, and song and dance performances, the theatre also hosted the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2007.
