The Puffing Billy Steam Train is an authentic relic of early Victorian-era traditional railways and is celebrated globally as Australia’s oldest and one of the best-preserved steam trains.

The Puffing Billy Steam Train is a key representation and highlight of Melbourne’s rail heritage, operating on a 762mm narrow-gauge railway nestled within the Dandenong Ranges, approximately 35 kilometers east of Melbourne. Spanning 25.1 kilometers from Belgrave Station to Gembrook Station, it is one of the narrow-gauge railways that thrived in Victoria during the early 20th century.

By the 1950s, with the shift in transportation modes, many narrow-gauge railways were gradually replaced by roads, and three other lines were dismantled. However, Puffing Billy was taken over and operated by a volunteer group called the “Puffing Billy Preservation Society.” Today, it is one of the world’s most famous narrow-gauge and steam tourist railways, as well as an important part of early railway heritage. With its scenic routes, challenging terrain, unique riding experience, and charming vintage locomotives, it continues to attract a growing number of visitors.
