The Old Treasury Building is considered one of the finest public buildings in Australia, completed in 1862. Throughout the 19th century, it served as Melbourne’s main government office building, second only to Parliament House, which was the center for national affairs.

The Old Treasury Building was designed by 19-year-old architect John James Clark and is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Renaissance Revival architecture in Australia. Until 1992, a series of government departments occupied the building, including the municipal office of the Governor of Victoria. After its restoration in 1994, the Old Treasury Building opened to the public as a museum, offering an ideal introduction for visitors who wish to explore Melbourne’s history, architectural heritage, and contemporary life.

The Old Treasury Building features three permanent exhibitions: one that recreates Victoria’s gold rush history, another that showcases Victoria’s rich historical archives, and a third that traces the development history of the Old Treasury Building itself.
