The Former Site of the Norman Bethune Specialized Surgical Hospital

The Former Site of the Norman Bethune Specialized Surgical Hospital is a cultural heritage site protected by Shanxi Province, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The Former Site of the Norman Bethune Specialized Surgical Hospital is located in Yangzhuang Village, Xiaguan Township, Lingqiu County, 67 kilometers from the county seat. The old hospital site remains largely intact. On November 9, 1938, Norman Bethune, an international communist fighter and renowned Canadian surgeon, led a medical team from the Jin-Cha-Ji Military District to Yangzhuang in Lingqiu from Fuping. He treated the wounded successively in Shifan, Chuanglinggou, Heisi, Quihuisi, and Hezhe, and established the Specialized Surgical Hospital in Yangzhuang Village—the location of the First Hospital of the Jin-Cha-Ji Military District—based on the needs of the anti-Japanese struggle. In 1996, it was designated as a “Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Lingqiu County” by the county government, in 2008 as a “Lingqiu County Integrity Education Base,” and also recognized by our township government as a “red tourism site.”
