Desert Highway

The Taklamakan Desert Highway spans the Taklamakan Desert in the Tarim Basin. It is the world’s first high-grade highway built in a shifting-sand desert. Construction began on June 3, 1990, and the highway was completed and opened to traffic in September 1995. It stretches 522 kilometers in total, with 446 kilometers crossing the desert.
