Yiwu Yishuiyuan Scenic Area

The Yishuiyuan Scenic Area mainly consists of an aquatic entertainment zone, a leisure fishing area, a memorial park, and a functional area. The Yishuiyuan covers a total area of 1,600 mu, enjoys convenient transportation, and is situated at the former battle site of the Southern Mountain during the 40-Day Defense Battle of Yiwu. The aquatic entertainment zone offers yachts, water walking balls, water tricycles, two- (and three-) person pedal bikes, etc. The leisure fishing area covers a total area of 206

mu and serves as a recreational venue integrating aquaculture, fishing, tourism, sports, and leisure. The memorial park is the site of the Southern Mountain battle during the 40-Day Defense Battle of Yiwu. In 2007, the exhibition hall, monument, martyrs' cemetery, hiking trails, visitor center, Heroes Tower, and Southern Mountain bunker were expanded and renovated.

The memorial park was built by the people of Yiwu to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives heroically in the 40-Day Defense Battle of Yiwu.

A shocking and awe-inspiring 40-Day Defense Battle of Yiwu once took place in Yiwu. Following Chairman Mao’s orders to march into Xinjiang and establish garrison farms for border defense, the entire Second Company of the First Battalion of the People's Liberation Army, led by Deputy Battalion Commander Hu Qingshan—a nationally recognized combat hero—entered Yiwu successively in March 1950.

In 1950, the then puppet county magistrate of Yiwu, Abaidula, conspired with bandit leaders Usman and Yolbolsun to launch a large-scale armed rebellion using Yiwu as their base.

After the PLA entered Yiwu, they split into three routes: one led by Company Commander Zhao Fugui, a national model worker, who moved into Nao Maohu; one went to Xia Ma Ya; and another was stationed in the county town under Deputy Battalion Commander Hu Qingshan. After the PLA arrived, the rebels intensified their rebellion activities—they secretly cut telephone lines, destroyed transport routes, and forcibly evacuated all residents from the county town. Under such circumstances—with no civilian support inside and no reinforcements outside—the Second Company of the First Battalion held the mountain town for forty days and nights, and finally held out until the arrival of the main reinforcement forces, achieving a complete victory in the 40-Day Defense Battle of Yiwu. Because this battle was a remarkable triumph of the few against the many and the weak against the strong, it shocked the nation. After the victory, Commander Peng Dehuai sent a message of commendation to the Second Company, which was also honored with the glorious title of "Steel Hero Company" by the First Field Army of the Northwest Military Region of the PLA.

In 1995, the Martyrs’ Cemetery was designated as a patriotic education base by the Autonomous Region Civil Affairs Department. In 2002, it was named a patriotic education base by the Autonomous Region Youth League Committee and designated by the National Ministry of Civil Affairs as a National Key Martyrs Memorial Building Protection Unit.
