Ciyun Nunnery in Daixian

Ciyun Nunnery is a cultural heritage site protected by Daixian County.

Ciyun Nunnery is located in Baojia Lane, Southeast Street Village, Shangguan Town, Daixian. According to inscriptions on steles, it was first built in the first year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1621), renovated in the 11th year of the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty (1806), and the current structure dates back to the Qing Dynasty. It faces south and covers an area of 1,590 square meters. The layout consists of a two-courtyard complex, with the Guanyin Hall and the Mahavira Hall constructed along the central axis, and monks' quarters on the east side. The Mahavira Hall stands on a stone foundation that is 11.8 meters wide, 9.5 meters deep, and 0.3 meters high. The hall has three bays in width and four rafters in depth, with a single-eave hanging gable roof. Its framework features six purlins and a front corridor, with four-panel lattice doors installed in the central and side bays of the front eaves. The nunnery currently houses one Ming Dynasty stele and two Qing Dynasty steles. In 1984, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Daixian County.
