Qikou Li Family Mountain Folk Houses

The Li Family Mountain Folk Houses are located in the ancient town of Qikou, Linyi County, Shanxi Province, and were built by the Li family during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The entire complex is built along the earthen hillside, adjacent to the Yellow River, resembling a phoenix spreading its wings. The buildings are constructed with finely jointed water-ground bricks, mostly featuring cave dwellings with open pillars, veranda eaves, and courtyard layouts. They follow the contours of the mountain, stacked at varying heights in an orderly fashion. The streets rise and fall, edged with strip stones and paved with block stones.

The folk houses are richly adorned with brick, wood, and stone carvings as well as exquisitely crafted plaques, all of which hold significant artistic value. Currently, Li Family Mountain Village has about a hundred courtyards and over 400 dwelling holes (rooms), inhabited by more than 220 households. Here, natural scenery and cultural landscapes complement each other, embodying the local loess-region customs and the profound culture of the Yellow River.
