Xibayn Residential Complex

The Xibayn Residential Complex is located about 1 kilometer north of Qikou Town and is a provincial-level cultural heritage site. The residential buildings in the Qikou tourist area include those in Xibayn, Lijiashan, and Zhaizishan, among which the Xibayn Residential Complex is the most representative.

The Xibayn Residential Complex in Xibayn Village, Qikou Town, Lin County, Shanxi Province, consists of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a typical example of Shanxi-style quadrangle courtyards and was among the first group of China's Historic and Cultural Villages. The main part of the complex is situated between two rocky hills, across a 30-degree slope where the residential buildings are layered and staggered, creating a complex spatial and plan layout that reaches up to six stories at its highest point. The entire village is interconnected by five stone-paved streets and alleys representing the five elements—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth—uniting dozens of residences into one cohesive unit. The settlement is enclosed by high walls, forming a castle-like, closed-off space. Courtyards are interconnected via small gates, allowing entrance into one courtyard to access the entire village.

The Xibayn Residential Complex is a typical example of the Lüliang-style quadrangle courtyard, rich in historical and cultural atmosphere and infused with distinctive loess culture characteristics. Currently, around 40 well-preserved courtyards remain. The entire architectural complex features a rational layout and effective flood drainage. Notably, the main gates, decorative gates, screen walls, and the wood, brick, and stone carvings on the halls are exquisitely crafted. The stone plaques along the streets and alleys each possess unique charm, making it an excellent resource for studying the folk customs of the Yellow River basin and Ming-Qing architecture. The residential buildings are constructed with meticulously fitted bricks, and feature abundant brick, wood, and stone carvings as well as beautifully inscribed plaques. The cave dwellings, towers, pavilions, and terraces showcase diverse designs and hold significant artistic value. The spaces between the walls along the streets and alleys are fitted with arched gateways, and watchtowers are built atop the gate structures, serving functions such as pedestrian passage and flood discharge.
