Wu Family Courtyard

The Wu Family Courtyard is a cultural heritage site protected by Lufeng County.

The Wu Family Courtyard is located behind Four Street in the Black Well neighborhood of Heijing Town, Lufeng County, and is a typical traditional residential compound. The exact construction date of the house is unknown, but preliminary research suggests it was built around the late Qing Dynasty by the Wu family, the largest salt merchants and salt producers in Heijing at the time. The courtyard is built against Wan Chun Mountain, facing east. Due to constraints imposed by the mountain terrain, the layout consists of two horizontal and three vertical sections. Along the central axis, there is a connecting hall and corridors, which divide the entire compound into two courtyards both east-west and north-south. With a screen wall on the eastern side of the front courtyard’s patio, the overall plan forms an irregular “field” shape. The complex includes 11 buildings, 4 patios, and one gate tower. All structures are built with post-and-lintel wooden frames. The front courtyard features a three-story, triple-eaved hip-and-gable roof, while the rear courtyard has two stories with double-eaved hip-and-gable roofs. Through the corridors of the connecting hall, front hall, and the front porches of the wing rooms, all the buildings are interconnected into a highly integrated whole. On rainy days, one can access any room from any point in the compound via the corridors and connecting halls without getting wet. As a residential building, the Wu Family Courtyard demonstrates the wisdom and exceptional craftsmanship of its builders in terms of layout design, structural connections, spatial planning, and utilization—representing the pinnacle of local architectural achievement in late Qing Dynasty Heijing.
