Menghuan Golden Tower

The Menghuan Golden Tower is situated on the summit of Leiyarang Mountain in the southeastern part of Mangshi City, standing at an altitude of 1,079.6 meters. Legend says that when Sakyamuni was reincarnated as a golden rooster in a previous life, he once lived here. Hundreds of years after the Buddha's nirvana, the Buddhist follower "Zhao Handa" came to this mountain to propagate the Buddha’s teachings. To ensure he had an ideal place for spiritual cultivation, the wild grass and thorns all made way, hence the name Leiyarang, meaning “where the wild grass parts.” Later, a Buddhist stupa was built on this mountain, which has long been recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist sites.

The entire tower stands 76 meters tall, with a base diameter of 50 meters. It is an octagonal, four-gated hollow Buddhist stupa, with the lower three levels forming hollow halls. The first level hall covers an area of 2,000 square meters, with four Buddha statues crafted on the central square pillar facing the four cardinal directions. The second and third levels feature 16 uniquely designed cluster stupas on their outer platforms, each housing a white marble Buddha statue. The main body of the stupa is bell-shaped, with eight small stupas built on the second and third levels, and eight exquisitely crafted vase-shaped stupas on the fourth-level outer platform. The central column above the base is constructed with a large bell and 13 bowls stacked on top, crowned at the highest point by a massive 2.3-ton golden spire. It is acclaimed as the largest golden Buddhist stupa in China and the largest hollow stupa in Asia. Towering, majestic, and grand in scale.

Fees: Entrance to the interior of the Golden Tower costs 50 RMB, with a discounted rate of 40 RMB during the off-season in November. Viewing the exterior is free.

Combined ticket for the Exotic Garden and Golden Tower: 80 RMB

Transportation: By car — drive east along Xianchi Road; it takes only 5–6 minutes if taking the fast route, or around 10+ minutes via a small path. Head uphill toward the East Campus of Dehong Education Institute, then enter the forest trail beside the Martyrs' Memorial Tower and climb a slope of over 300 meters. Alternatively, take a taxi.
